‘Great Unknown’ reflects our relationship with God. This artwork is
formed by several puzzle pieces to represent hardships in life. Life is like a
puzzle — it’s challenging to piece them all together. It’s harder to see the
bigger picture that God has drawn for us when we’re holding onto a smaller
piece of his ‘puzzle’. We tend to question God about everything, and
sometimes blaming Him for every of our unanswered questions. However,
with His grace, we overcome our challenges even in the midst of
uncertainties. During this time, a bigger picture is formed clearly from the
puzzles of our answered questions.
Waves are used in my artwork as I was inspired by the event where
Jesus walked on the water. His disciple Peter was determined to follow Jesus
but was weighed down by his fears of stormy winds and waves. There are
times where I was discouraged and drown in an ocean of my fears. Jesus led
me up by holding onto me, just as what He did to Peter. In the end, I know I’ll
have the courage to venture out to the great unknown, as I know He'll save
me.
Patience and perseverance is also another theme I’ve applied to my
artwork. I’ve created my work with a lot of layering to symbolize the pain I’ve
personally gone through. I was disappointed by the numerous lies I’ve been
told when I’m living my life— even when I’ve placed my heart and soul into
doing everything. But in the end, like the waves, it emerged beautifully as I’ve
learned to cover it with layers of faith. Without the pain, we won’t learn to be
strong and stand to be a better person. Just as how this painting will not look
as beautiful without the many layering of paint.
