Panjat pinang is one of the popular traditional competitions on Indonesia's Independence Day celebrations.
A tall areca palm tree and its trunks are covered with lubricant prepared by the competition committee. At the top of the tree, various attractive prizes were prepared. Participants competed to get the prizes by climbing tree trunks, which are usually areca trees.
Pinang climbing originated from the Dutch colonial era first. Pinang climbing competition is held by the Dutch if they are holding a big event such as a celebration, a wedding, and others. Participants in this competition are indigenous people.
