Contrary to popular belief everyday life in Japan is very old fashioned. Tradition is very important and in general people live soberly with very few possessions and little technology. Of course cell phones and iPads are everywhere but an astounding number of things are still done by hand. As a side effect the book industry is still thriving in Japan, when on the metro or the train you will see people on phones of course, but you will also spot quite a few reading actual paper books, it is wonderful! And when you travel in Japan, even going to a garden or museum you will always be handed a paper flyer or booklet, explaining in detail all the information about the place you’re visiting. And you will see every single Japanese person studying this information so they know exactly what they are looking at during their visit. Always well educated on an excursion the Japanese are!
